Music

Our Vision for Music

At Ropery Walk Primary School, music plays an important role in inspiring creativity, confidence, and enjoyment. Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is built around six “Golden Threads” that guide our teaching and learning:

  • Listening and appraising
  • Singing and using the voice
  • Playing instruments
  • Creating and composing
  • Performing and sharing
  • Understanding notation

These threads help children develop their musical skills step by step as they move through the school, ensuring a clear sense of progression and achievement for all learners.
We use the Charanga Music Scheme from Reception to Year 3, providing a consistent structure that supports both children and teachers, including non-specialists. Lessons are inclusive, practical, and engaging, with opportunities for all pupils to take part regardless of ability or background.
Throughout the year, children take part in a variety of performances, including the much-loved Nativity, class assemblies, and seasonal concerts. These experiences help pupils grow in their confidence, teamwork, and self-expression, while developing a lifelong appreciation of music.

In our school curriculum, “golden threads” are key concepts or skills that are revisited, built upon, and connected across multiple subjects creating a sense of coherence and continuity. Please click the document below to read more about how our six golden threads run through and underpin our EYFS, KS1 and KS2 curriculum.
