At Ropery Walk, we believe that learning about history helps children understand the world around them and their place within it. Our aim is to inspire curiosity about the past, enabling pupils to develop a secure sense of chronology and an appreciation of how people, events and societies have shaped the world we live in today.
Through an engaging, knowledge-rich curriculum, children explore significant aspects of local, national and global history. We seek to develop pupils’ historical enquiry skills by encouraging them to ask questions, analyse evidence, think critically and form their own informed interpretations of the past.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is structured around five ‘Golden Threads’ that underpin teaching and learning across all year groups:
-
Community and culture
-
Invention
-
Religion and Beliefs
-
Invasion and settlement
-
Societal change
At Ropery Walk, we want our children to:
-
Know and understand the history of Britain as a coherent, chronological narrative.
-
Understand significant aspects of world history, including ancient civilisations and societies.
-
Gain and deploy a historically grounded understanding of key concepts.
-
Understand historical methods of enquiry and how evidence is used to make claims about the past.
-
Gain historical perspective by making connections between local, national and international history.
