Computing

Computing is a fundamental part of our teaching and learning at Ropery Walk. Our computing curriculum provides our pupils with:

  • the ability to use and apply a variety of computing skills and concepts.
  • a wide knowledge of the different areas of computing; Digital Literacy, Computer Science and Information Technology.
Children in KS1 and KS2 follow an adapted spiral curriculum based on the Teach Computing scheme. As children move through the year groups, they will continue to build and develop on prior knowledge and skills from previous years’ teaching across 4 key areas: Computing Systems and Networks, Creating Media, Programming and Data and Information as well as through our golden threads. Across these units, children will use physical computing kits such as Microbits and Crumble as well as using iPads and laptops to ensure children become familiar with more than one type of digital device. 
In EYFS, children are taught the basics of how to become ‘Computational Thinkers’ through a variety of practical activities that have our children tackle a range of concepts using different approaches.

Digital Citizenship
At Ropery Walk, we have taken the Digital Citizenship approach to teaching our children how to become upstanding digital citizens in our ever-changing digital world. Following the scheme created by Common Sense Media, our children are taught through 6 different golden threads which teaches them how to be kind, respectful and safe online as well as giving them the tools to identify and manage the risks that come with accessing the digital world. Starting in Early Years and leading all the way to the end of Year 6, our children: 
  • Know the power of their words and actions
  • Can define who they are 
  • Are kind and courageous
  • Find balance in their digital lives
  • Are critical thinkers and creators
  • Care about everyone’s privacy
